χρυσίον, χρυσίου, τό (diminutive of χρυσός, cf. φορτίον), from Herodotus down, the Sept. for זָהַב, gold, both that which lies imbedded in the earth and is dug out of it (Plato, Euthyd., p. 288 e.; the Sept. Genesis 2:11; hence, μεταλλευθεν, Lucian, de sacr. 11): χρυσίον πεπυρωμένον ἐκ πυρός (R.
